Do Wrought iron fences rust?

Iron tends to rust especially when kept outside where there is moisture and corrosion is likely to take place. Wrought iron is no exception when it comes to rust even though it takes time for the rust to cause any structural damage.

Wrought iron contains a lot of carbon atoms that are embedded when forged. According to Ben from HomeGardenGuides When this carbon atom comes into contact with dirt, moisture, or grime rust can easily and quickly be formed. This can make the fence look like it was not properly cared for. Therefore it is advisable to regularly maintain wrought iron fences in order to prevent them from rusting and make them last a lifetime. Some of the methods to prevent wrought iron fences from rusting have been discussed below.

Tips to Prevent Wrought Fences From Rusting

In order to maintain the elegant look of wrought iron, it’s recommended to follow some routine maintenance. Some of the tips that can prevent rust and corrosion which are the major threat to this iron include:

1. Coating and painting the fence

This has been over the years the best and long-lasting method of protecting the iron by preventing its corrosion. It is advisable to use an oil-resistant primer followed by a layer of oil-based metal paint after the surface has dried. Another second layer of the paint can be added later for maximum protection.

2. Consequently removing any sign of rust

It’s important to inspect your wrought iron fence periodically in order to get rid of any sign of rust. This method is mostly advisable for people living in areas of high or low temperatures, which have lots of rain, and also locations with road salt or lots of snow.

If the spot is light, then the area can be buffed gently using sandpaper until the rust is removed. On the other hand, if the spot is larger, one can use a rust-dissolving cleaner or a metal brush. Safety should however be observed when dealing with any amount of rust since the iron dust can cause problems if it gets into your lungs. Therefore, always wear protective clothing like goggles, masks, and gloves.

3. Washing and drying the fence

This can be done at least twice a year. It helps to remove any dirt or foreign material which might contain salt and moisture that causes corrosion. A soft cloth soaked with warm water may be used together with dish soap (use a paint-safe soap) or an old toothbrush on tight spots. It is then followed by rinsing the entire fence of soap residue and drying it up with a lint-free clean microfiber cloth.

Pros and Cons of Wrought Iron Fences

Even though this type of fence is preferred by many property owners and homeowners, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with the fence material. Some of which are discussed below

Pros

Beautiful

Wrought iron fences have an incredible and elegant appeal which makes them at the top of the chart compared to other types of metal fences. They also come in different shapes and styles thus suiting the preferences of many different people. The incredible look that it gives to many homes is the reason why it is called ornamental.

Very tough

Wrought iron fence is metallic in nature, thus the reason for its durability characteristic. This fence can therefore be used for security purposes among other reasons. When compared to other types of metal fences, it is easy to maintain in order to avoid rust and corrosion which usually comes after a long period of time. Furthermore, it can also be galvanized with other materials to increase its durability and to also avoid maintenance costs.

Cons

Privacy

Even though wrought iron fences act as security fences, they are poor when it comes to privacy. The iron or steel bars are designed to close together to keep intruders out but they aren’t flush. They have gaps in between them that allow anyone to see through to the other side with ease. This can be uncomfortable for many homeowners.

Costly

The wrought iron fence is made of expensive material. It is made by repeatedly heating and reworking cast iron in order to give it its laminar structure which makes it a costly material due to the manufacturing process. Depending on the installation method, it can also be labor-intensive during installation. Its classic look and rugged stature also need some skilled laborers unlike other alternatives like wood.

  Conclusion

Merits of wrought iron fences stand out compared to its demerits which in this case can be taken care of. In fact,  It does not only serve as a security fence but also Its beautiful aesthetics and classic feels make it preferable among many homeowners and property owners. Additionally, it also has a tendency of retaining its timeless look over a long period of time if properly maintained. Even though its installation it’s costly, it serves a lifetime due to its durability.

When compared to cast iron fences, this type of fence can be repaired in many ways like repainting in case of corrosion and rust can be brushed off, unlike cast iron which in case of rust loses its strength and needs to be replaced by another. Furthermore, traditional wrought iron which tends to chip, rust, or even rot has been recently replaced with galvanized ornament steel which is more durable and also serves as a solution for lifetime maintenance.

With all these advantages, it can be concluded that the wrought iron fence still serves as the best fence even in this evolving world.
