How Balancing Your Hormones Can Help Your Feelings of Anxiety

If you’re feeling more anxious than usual getting stressed over situations that you normally wouldn’t, your hormones might be to blame. Believe it or not, hormones regulate everything in the body from the metabolism to your emotions. Various hormones produced in the body are key to regulating your emotions. Whenever your hormones are imbalanced it could negatively influence your emotions. An example of this is feeling anxious and stressed more than usual during times when your hormones sex hormones, stress hormones, and/or human growth hormone are lower than normal. The sex hormones estrogen and testosterone are mainly responsible for regulating reproduction; however, they are needed for other functions as well. The same can be said for human growth hormone as its main purpose is regulating bone and muscle growth, yet is also needed for certain cognitive functioning Having an imbalance in sex hormones and human growth hormone can impair your ability to remain calm in stressful situations causing a rise in feelings of anxiety. In regards to the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol these are the main hormones responsible for feelings of anxiety during time of stress. Hormones are key to controlling your emotions, especially feelings of anxiety. Balancing Your Hormones to Ease Your Feelings of Anxiety

It can be tricky realizing when your having excessive feelings of anxiety making it important to know what hormones influence your anxiety, and what you can do about it. As stated earlier there are 5 hormones that can cause excessive feelings of anxiety when they are imbalanced.

  1. Sex Hormones
    Estrogen: Along with regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle, is scientifically-proven to have a calming effect reducing fear and anxiety. When estrogen is lower than expected it could hinder your ability to remain calm during stressful situations. Testosterone: There is a study that there is a link between low levels of testosterone and increased anxiety. Testosterone has shown to reduce activity of the amygdala, a structure in the brain that reacts to stress by initiating the fight-or-flight response. Reducing the activity in the amygdala allows for rational thinking during stressful situations. Having low levels of testosterone can hinder calm rational thinking and create excessive feelings of stress.   2. Stress Hormones
    Cortisol: In stressful situations, no matter how big or small, where you feel overwhelmed and out of control cortisol is released. Cortisol prepares the body to cope with an impending threat and take action after the fight-or-flight response is initiated by the amygdala. However, in situations where there is no threat excess production of cortisol can cause overwhelming feelings of anxiety.
  3. Human Growth Hormone
    Human growth hormone: HGH is a special case as this hormone’s primary role is to regulate bone and muscle growth. However, low-levels of this hormone has been scientifically linked to increased feelings of depression and anxiety.

It is more than likely that you can experience feelings of anxiety in response to having a hormone imbalance with your sex hormones, stress hormone, or human growth hormone. It is even more likely for your anxiety symptoms to be caused by having an imbalance of your sex and stress hormones as excessive production of cortisol can reduce the production of your sex hormones. If you have tried easing your feelings of anxiety, but have had no relief it is possible that a hormone imbalance can be the root cause of your anxiety. It could even be said that anxiety is a hormone imbalance. This is especially true if you are normally the type of person to stay calm and level headed in stressful situations instead of anxious and panicky. If you have suddenly become anxious over situations that you don’t believe would have caused serious distress in the past, then it may be best to consult with a physician to know for sure if your hormones are responsible. If your feelings of anxiety are due to high levels of cortisol due to stress there are several calming techniques to bring down your stress reducing cortisol levels. However, if it’s one of your other hormones that are imbalanced, then consult with a hormone specialist for help in restoring balance between your hormones to ease your anxiety.
